Hanuman Prashnavali

The Hanuman Prashnavali is a triangle of 49 numbers. You say Hanuman ji’s mantra, hold one question in mind and touch a number. Each number carries a fixed answer, and many come with an upay, a small remedy such as a Tuesday fast or reciting the Hanuman Chalisa.

Touch any number to ask your question.

  1. Bathe if you can and sit facing the chart. Remember Shri Ram, then Hanuman ji.
  2. Say the mantra below eleven times.
  3. Hold one question in mind, close your eyes and touch a number.

Mantra: ॐ हं हनुमते नमः (Om Ham Hanumate Namah), say it 11 times

Touch any number to ask your question.

How does the Hanuman Prashnavali work?

The chart is a triangle of 49 small cells in seven rows, one cell at the top and thirteen at the base. Each cell holds a number from 1 to 49, and each number has one answer written against it. You do not count or calculate anything: the number your finger lands on is your answer.

Some answers are a plain yes, a no or a "wait". More than half add an upay, a remedy the tradition ties to that answer. Most are Hanuman’s own: a Tuesday fast, the Chalisa, the Bajrang Baan, a chola of sindoor offered at the temple. A few point to Ram, Shiva or the Devi, because the chart sees Hanuman as Ram’s servant first.

Where does the Hanuman Prashnavali come from?

This chart belongs to the same family of household oracles as the Ram Shalaka, and it has been printed in Hindi almanacs and devotional booklets for decades, often called the Hanuman Prashnavali Chakra or Hanuman Jyotish. Its age and author are not recorded. What is fixed is the list: the 49 answers say the same thing, number for number, in every older source we compared.

We checked our list against those sources one number at a time before writing it in our own words, in English and in Hindi. Where the sources disagreed on a detail of a remedy, we kept the part they share.

When is the best day to ask Hanuman ji?

Tuesday is Hanuman ji’s day, and Saturday is the other day his devotees keep. Asking on either, early in the day, is the usual practice. Many people go to the chart after their morning prayers, in or just after Brahma Muhurta.

Avoid asking in a rush or in anger. If you are starting something on the strength of the answer, such as a journey or an interview, the choghadiya for your city shows which hours of the day are good for a start.

What should you do with the remedy?

Treat the upay as a promise you make, not a fee you pay. If the answer asks for eleven Tuesday fasts, keep them as far as your health allows; a person who cannot fast can offer the day’s prayers and give food to someone in need instead. Nothing here asks you to buy anything.

If an answer says no, take it as a reason to look again at the plan. Hanuman ji is remembered for courage and for service, and the remedies point that way: pray, and keep working.

Hanuman Prashnavali: frequently asked questions

How many times should I say the mantra before asking?

Eleven times is the usual count for "Om Ham Hanumate Namah". Some families first chant "Ram" 108 times on a tulsi mala, since Hanuman ji is pleased by Ram’s name.

Can I ask the Hanuman Prashnavali about someone else?

Yes, if you are asking with their good in mind. Keep it to one question, and let them know the answer was a prayer, not a prediction.

Is it bad luck to get a "no"?

No. A hard answer is guidance to pause or change course. Many devotees see it as Hanuman ji stopping them from a mistake.

How many questions can I ask in a day?

One question at a time, and no more than three in a day. Never ask the same question twice on the same day.
