Mangal dosha calculator: are you Manglik?
Checked calculation · updated 22 October 2026
Mangal dosha is read from the house Mars occupies counted from your lagna. Enter your name, birth date, time and place to see whether you are Manglik, how strong the dosha is, and whether a planet in your chart cancels it, with every rule shown.
What is Mangal dosha?
Mangal dosha, also called Manglik dosha or Kuja dosha, is the placement of Mars (Mangal) in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart, counted from the lagna. Mars is read as a hot, quarrelsome planet, and these six houses touch the self, the family, home, marriage and the spouse’s longevity, so the placement is checked before a marriage is fixed.
North Indian astrologers traditionally counted the 1st house and not the 2nd; South Indian astrologers the 2nd and not the 1st. The standard panchangs now count both, and so does this calculator. It tells you which house Mars is in, so you can read it either way.
Why does it need my birth time and place?
Because the houses are counted from the lagna, the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, and the lagna changes about every two hours. A birth time that is wrong by an hour can move Mars from the 12th house to the 1st, or out of the dosha houses altogether. The place sets the horizon and the time zone in force on that date.
When your lagna changes sign within 30 minutes of the time you enter, the calculator says so, and names the house Mars would be in on the other side.
How strong is my Mangal dosha?
The calculator gives the strength as a percentage, as the standard panchangs do. Mars alone counts for 50% in the 12th house, 60% in the 1st, 80% in the 2nd and 4th, and 100% in the 7th and 8th, the two houses of marriage. Saturn, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu each strengthen it when they also sit in one of the six houses: one of them raises it to 150% (200% in the 7th or 8th), two or more to 200% (250%).
Which rules cancel Mangal dosha?
Many Manglik charts also carry a combination that cancels the dosha, and the calculator checks the ones the standard panchangs apply. Mars in its own or a friendly sign for that house: Mesha in the 1st, Mithuna or Kanya in the 2nd, Mesha or Vrishchika in the 4th, Karka or Makara in the 7th, Karka, Dhanu or Meena in the 8th, Vrishabha or Tula in the 12th. Mars in Simha or Kumbha in any of the six houses. Jupiter, the Moon or Rahu in the same sign as Mars. Jupiter or Venus in the lagna, or Venus in the 7th. And Jupiter aspecting Mars, which it does when Mars is the 5th, 7th or 9th sign from it.
A cancelled dosha is still shown with its percentage, marked cancelled, so you can see what was there and what cancelled it.
How was this calculator checked?
Its results were compared with a standard reference panchang’s Mangal dosha calculator on 282 birth charts from 1950 to 2015 in six cities, 42 of them chosen for the rare cases. The house, the percentage, the strengthening planets and every cancellation agreed on all of them, except two whose lagna was within 17 seconds of changing sign; that is why the calculator warns near a sign edge. Positions come from the same engine as this site’s panchang timings, described on the methodology page.
Mangal dosha: frequently asked questions
Should a Manglik marry only a Manglik?
That is the custom: when both partners have an active Mangal dosha, the two are held to cancel each other. A Manglik and a non-Manglik are traditionally advised against, unless the dosha is cancelled in the chart. The gun milan calculator checks Mangal dosha for both of you alongside the 36 points.
Does Mangal dosha end at 28?
Many families believe its effect weakens after the age of 28, when Mars is said to mature. It is a widely held custom rather than a rule of the classical texts, and the standard panchangs do not apply it to the calculation, so this calculator does not either.
Is it checked from the Moon and Venus as well?
Some astrologers also count the houses from the Moon and from Venus. The standard panchang result this calculator was checked against reads the dosha from the lagna, so that is what it shows. The house of Mars from the lagna is given, so a pandit can read the other charts from the same chart if your family follows that practice.
What does a percentage above 100 mean?
It means Mars is joined in the dosha houses by Saturn, the Sun, Rahu or Ketu, which the tradition reads as strengthening it. It is a measure of strength, not a probability: 250% is the strongest form, with Mars in the 7th or 8th and two or more of those planets also in a dosha house.
My result says cancelled. Am I Manglik or not?
The dosha is present in your chart, but a combination the panchangs accept cancels it, so in practice you are treated as non-Manglik. The result names the rule that cancels it, which is what your pandit will want to see.
Is my birth data saved anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Only the birth place you pick is sent to our server, by town name, to get its latitude, longitude and time zone. Your name, date and time of birth stay on your device.
