Naam se rashi: your rashi from your name

Your naam rashi is the rashi your name points to through its first syllable. Type a name in English or Hindi and the calculator reads its first sound against the traditional chart of 108 naming syllables, one for each nakshatra pada, and gives the pada, the nakshatra and the rashi.

What is naam rashi?

At a naming ceremony the pandit finds the pada of the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth, and the family picks a name that starts with that pada’s syllable: Chu, Che, Cho or La for the four padas of Ashwini, and so on through all 108. Read backwards, the first syllable of a name points to a pada, the pada to a nakshatra, and the nakshatra to a rashi. That rashi is the naam rashi.

It is not always your janma rashi, the Moon’s sign at birth. Many names were not chosen by the syllable, and many families use a pet name for daily life. When the two differ, the janma rashi from the rashi calculator is the one a kundali uses; the naam rashi is the one people use when no birth time is known.

How is a name read?

The calculator takes the first syllable of the name as it is spoken. A conjunct is read by its first letter, so Pra is Pa and Kshi is Ki. The length of the vowel does not change the syllable: Ra and Raa, Mi and Mee are the same. Ai reads as e, au as o, and Ri (as in Rishi) as Ree. Ba is read as Va and Sha as Sa, the two equivalences the naming charts print.

If the exact sound is in the chart, you get its pada. If only the consonant is there, with other vowels, and all of them fall in one rashi, you get that rashi. Otherwise the calculator says the sound is not in the chart rather than guess.

Why can a name in English give two answers?

English letters cannot tell some Hindi sounds apart. T can be the soft t of Tanya or the hard t of Tina, and D, Th and Dh each have a soft and a hard sound in the same way. These sit in different padas, sometimes in different rashis: the soft Taa is Tula, the hard Taa is Simha. When the readings disagree the calculator shows each one, and typing the name in Hindi settles it.

Which syllables belong to each rashi?

The chart below is the standard one used by panchangs, pada by pada: four syllables to a nakshatra, nine to a rashi. Published charts differ on a few syllables, Shravana’s most of all (some print Ju, Je, Jo, Gha); this calculator follows the standard panchang’s chart, which gives Shravana as Khi, Khu, Khe, Kho.

Naam se rashi: frequently asked questions

Is naam rashi the same as janma rashi?

Only if the name was chosen by the birth nakshatra’s syllable. The janma rashi is the Moon’s sign at the moment of birth and needs the birth date, time and place; the naam rashi comes from the first sound of the name. For a kundli or gun milan the janma rashi is the one to use.

Which rashi is used for daily horoscopes?

Newspaper and app horoscopes are written for the rashi you read, and many people read the one their name gives because they do not know their birth time. If you know it, the janma rashi is the more accurate one; the rashi calculator finds it.

My name starts with B or Sh. Which rashi is it?

B is read as V, so a name starting with Ba (Babita, Bablu) takes the syllable Vaa, Rohini 2, Vrishabha rashi. Sh is read as S, so Shweta reads as Se, Purva Bhadrapada 1, Kumbha rashi. The result says when it has used one of these two readings.

Why does the result say the sound is not in the chart?

A few sounds are not in the 108: Ju, Je and Jo, and Kha, for example, belong to Abhijit, the 28th nakshatra, which the 27-nakshatra chart leaves out. If all the chart’s syllables with that consonant lie in one rashi, the calculator still gives that rashi; if they do not, it says so instead of guessing.

Can I use this to choose a baby’s name?

Yes, the other way round: find the baby’s nakshatra and pada with the rashi calculator, then look up that pada’s syllable in the chart on this page. Names starting with that syllable are the traditional choice.

Do you store the names I type?

No. The name is read in your browser and never sent to our server or anyone else. We do not count or keep the names typed here, and nothing is left after you close the page.
