Govardhan Puja 2026
Govardhan Puja 2026: date and muhurat in your city

Govardhan Puja 2026 is on Tuesday 10 November. The puja’s muhurat is in the morning, called Pratahkala, and in New Delhi it runs from 6:39 to 8:49 AM. Pratipada tithi, which the day belongs to, lasts until about 2:00 PM, so the whole morning is good for the Govardhan and the Annakut offering. The window moves with your city’s sunrise; the table below gives 30 cities.
This year there is a day’s gap after Diwali. Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November, Monday the 9th is Amavasya until 12:31 PM, and Govardhan Puja follows on Tuesday. The same Tuesday is Annakut in temples, Bali Pratipada in Maharashtra and the Gujarati New Year.
When is Govardhan Puja in 2026?
Govardhan Puja is kept on Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the day after the Diwali new moon. In 2026 Pratipada begins at 12:31 PM on 9 November and ends at 2:00 PM on 10 November (New Delhi). Pratipada is the tithi at sunrise on the 10th, so that is the day panchangs give, and they agree on it.
Why not the 9th, when Pratipada has already begun by the afternoon? A tithi is counted for the day on whose sunrise it stands. On the morning of 9 November it is still Amavasya, the day many families keep for the Diwali bath and Dev Puja. Our festival calendar for 2026 has the whole Diwali week.
What is the Govardhan Puja muhurat in my city?
Panchangs give Govardhan Puja a morning muhurat, Pratahkala: the first fifth of the daytime, from sunrise. Because it is a share of the day, it starts at 5:45 AM in Kolkata and 6:55 AM in Rajkot. The second column is that window. The third is the late-morning Labh and Amrit choghadiya, for families who choose the time by choghadiya rather than by Pratahkala; it also ends before Pratipada does, in every city in the table.

Is the morning choghadiya good on Govardhan Puja?
Not on the choghadiya clock. Tuesday’s day opens with Rog and then Udveg, and the Pratahkala window falls across those two. Panchangs still give Pratahkala, because Govardhan Puja is timed by the part of the day, not by the choghadiya. If your family keeps Pratahkala, the choghadiya is no reason to move.
If your family does go by choghadiya, take Labh and Amrit in the late morning (10:43 AM to 1:26 PM in New Delhi). They are the day’s two good periods before Pratipada ends. Tuesday’s Rahu Kaal falls in the afternoon, around 2:47 to 4:08 PM in New Delhi, after both windows, so it does not get in the way. Shubh, the seventh choghadiya, is out for a reason of its own: on a Tuesday it is the same 80-odd minutes as Rahu Kaal.
How is Govardhan Puja done at home?
In much of UP, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the women of the house shape a small Govardhan from cow dung in the courtyard: a reclining figure for the hill, with cows, a cowherd and a pond around it, decorated with flowers, grass stalks and rice. The family walks around it, offers water, roli and sweets, and in many villages the cows are bathed and worshipped the same morning.

Annakut, the “mountain of food”, is the other half of the day. A spread of cooked dishes (rice, kadhi, mixed vegetables, puri, sweets) is offered to Krishna, often as chhappan bhog in temples, and then shared as prasad. Near Mathura, pilgrims walk the parikrama of Govardhan hill itself. The story behind all of it is Krishna lifting the hill on one finger to shelter Gokul from Indra’s rain.
What comes after Govardhan Puja?
Bhai Dooj is the next day, Wednesday 11 November, and its tilak is done in the afternoon. Our Bhai Dooj 2026 tilak time guide has that window for 30 cities, and the Dhanteras and Diwali 2026 choghadiya guide covers the start of the week.
Times worked out on 20 October 2026 for each city’s coordinates. Dates are for New Delhi and were checked against a reference panchang; see how we calculate.

This post describes what the panchang tradition says about a window; it is not personal advice. Times on the linked pages are computed for the city you choose.
